About IBAA

Our Mission

Our association is dedicated to preserving and strengthening the insurance broker.

Our Vision

To be a professional, progressive, and innovative association.

Value We Bring Our Members

  • We lobby with government insurance regulators and the insurance industry on behalf of our member brokers and the insurance consumers they represent
  • We deliver quality, affordable, and accessible insurance education programs
  • We provide member benefits, such as marketing and business support, group health insurance, and insurance products, designed to boost our member businesses

How We Work

Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta (IBAA) is governed by a board of exceptional volunteers elected from IBAA members across Alberta, so we have a broad perspective of regional issues. These folks use their years of expertise and experience as insurance brokers to set direction for IBAA based on our vision and mission. Who better to chart our course than insurance brokers?

The IBAA office is staffed with a fun, dedicated team who take the strategy set by the board and "make it so." Everything we do is with our board's objectives and our members success in mind. We research current issues facing brokers and use them to expand our professional development, lobbying positions, and member-benefit offerings—all designed to boost insurance broker business.

It All Started When ...

Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta (IBAA) started way back in 1921 by insurance brokers as the "Insurance Agents Association of Alberta" (IAAA). The few brokers in business at the time came together to network, discuss common issues, and lobby on behalf of brokers. It became quite a powerful little group throughout the mid-20th century.

Did you know?

  • IBAA at one time was the licensing body for agents and introduced the concept of "qualification" to work as an agent.
  • IBAA developed the original licensing exam and collected the monies (The Superintendent wanted nothing to do with it).
  • IBAA was enlisted to help the Superintendent quash the Hudson's Bay Company's attempt to start its own insurer.
  • Membership was based on individuals, not brokerages, and cost $5.

Today ...

IBAA is a not-for-profit trade association representing over 4200 members in about 250 individual brokerages, working in 600 offices throughout Alberta, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Our members live and work in 152 communities and are closely connected with insurance consumers, their insurance issues, and the local issues, economics, and goals of their local communities.

IBAA is also a proud member of Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC), our national counterpart. Together, we believe that consumers are best served through insurance brokers who work to find the best coverage at the right price from a variety of insurers. Our association members are identified by the purple stylized person wrapped in a blanket that represents our dedication to insurance consumer protection and trust.
