Personal Lines Level 1

Learning Objectives

This pre-licensing course is all you'll need to prepare yourself for the Level 1 Licensing Exam. 
Divided into four sections, the course follows the same outline as the exam.

  • Section One:  General
    • To learn the terms and definitions that are inherent to the insurance industry.
    • To understand the idiosyncracies of insurance contracts and the law.
    • To learn the basic principles and practices on insurance.
  • Section Two:  Property
    • To familiarize you with common property clauses (mortgage, basis of settlement, etc.)
    • To help you understand basic coverages provided by the residential package policies.
  • Section Three:  Auto
    • To help you understand the differences between the various approved Standard Policy Forms (SPF).
    • To dissect and analyze the SPF #1 (Standard Automobile Policy Form) and its most commonly used endorsements, as well as its related application form.
  • Section Four:  Liability
    • To help you understand liability and to walk you through the basic concepts of tort law and the need for liability insurance.

You can choose from four study methods for the level 1 licensing exam:  self-study, an online course, an immersion course, or a weekend/evening course.

Self-Study

You can begin the self-study course at any time.  By registering online, you will receive study materials by mail. Contact the Alberta Insurance Council for information on exams.

Based on the user friendly text, Fundamentals of Insurance, you'll appreciate the narrative approach and easy-to understand language which will help erase the mysteries of insurance.

Online Course

By purchasing the online course, you will receive anytime access to the course for 60 days. The online study package also includes a course manual, quizzes and a crossword puzzle. Contact the Alberta Insurance Council for information on exams.

Online Course Instructions

Please note that you will receive your password after your registration has been confirmed. Once you have completed your registration, received your manual and password from our registration department, you can access the course by clicking here.

 

Immersion Courses

These courses will provide the necessary information for the student wishing to attempt the Level 1 Licensing Exam. The exam is offered at the end of the course. If successful, the student may apply, through an insurance brokerage, for a level 1 license.
