Successful organizations rank workplace health among the top management functions and realize that the results of these efforts directly affect competitiveness and the bottom line. Build your own healthy workplace by learning the Canadian Healthy Workplace criteria, comprehensive guidelines drawn from the National Quality Institute (NQI) Canadian Awards for Excellence (CAE) in partnership with Health Canada and in association with professionals from the health and safety sector.

Hone your skill in business management, employee management, health and safety, organizational culture, planning and organization, and quality management.

7 Required Modules

Introduction
  • Overview Canadian Healthy Workplace Criteria and its strategic approach to attaining organizational health.
  • Learn the content and the objectives of the Framework for the Development of a Healthy Workplace online program.
Principles
  • Identify the five principles that are the basis for developing and sustaining a healthy workplace.
  • Examine factors that contribute to mental, physical, and social well-being in the workplace.
  • Learn the criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of these principles and the role of senior management in supporting healthy workplace principles.
Leadership
  • Determine priorities in workplace health issues linked to the strategic direction of your organization.
  • Examine the commitment of management to a healthy workplace and the essential elements of positive leadership.
  • Learn to improve your leadership abilities, to share responsibility and accountability for healthy workplace issues, and to consider employee health in decision making.
  • Create a healthy workplace vision.
  • Assess your mission statement for the values it reflects about the organization’s commitment to employee well-being.
  • Understand the steps for developing a healthy workplace policy.
Planning and Programs
  • Set long-term objectives in the planning process for specific (and recommended) healthy-workplace programs in your organization.
  • Examine the way three key elements of a healthy workplace—Physical Environment, Health Practices, and Social Environment and Personal Resources—build on one another to meet employees’ needs.
  • Learn how to evaluate the state of employee wellness in your organization.
  • Examine the steps for developing a healthy workplace plan, a program design, and long-term objectives.
People Engagement
  • Create an environment where people want to come to work each day and bring their whole being to work.
  • Examine the relation of employee respect, fairness, trust, and sense of purpose to the ability to encourage and sustain a healthy workplace.
  • Learn how organizations can foster and support an environment that encourages people to get involved in healthy activities.
  • Examine the issues of control, flexibility, recognition, and input into decision-making and how these can be fostered in the workplace.
Process Management and Risk Assessment Results
  • Assess work processes, tasks, and technologies to promote employee health, prevent illness, and remove workplace hazards.
  • Learn formal assessments to identify and assess any hazards that restrict the development and sustainability of a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Analyze findings to determine opportunities for improvement, and learn some common methods for fostering employee physical, social, and psychological health.
  • Examine a sample Healthy Workplace Plan that includes an appropriate evaluation and review processes.
Results
  • Examine methods of evaluation and barriers to good evaluation.
  • Learn different methods of tracking and analyzing data, the use of this data in strategic plans and future program planning, and methods to assess return on investment and cost-effectiveness of workplace wellness.
  • Analyze five common barriers to good evaluation and methods to overcome the hurdles.
  • Examine the results and achievements that flow from a healthy workplace.
