Rebuilding Flood-Damaged Homes and Businesses
Share |
Watch out for contractor impostors! The Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta (IBAA) wants to make sure that consumers are protected from dodgy contractors before work gets started. Flood victims have suffered enough without having to put up with shoddy workmanship and further headaches down the road.
  • Our website contains a list of reputable contractors who are skilled at handling disaster restoration. These contractors have several years’ experience doing repair and restoration work for the insurance industry and stand behind their work.
  • We have attached a link to our website for the Alberta division of the Canadian Home Builders Association (CHBA). There, customers will find information on how to deal with flood damage to their home or business and how to hire a reputable contractor. The best advice we can offer is for people to do their due diligence: follow the appropriate steps for hiring a contractor and get the contract for the work in writing. Make sure contractors offer a warranty on their work—in writing.
  • If you are unable to access the internet, call your insurance broker, who can access to this information for you.

Lastly, consumers should talk to their insurance broker about extending cover for their liability and new purchases so they are protected while their homes are being repaired or rebuilt.
