Superintendent Advises Wood Buffalo Wildfire Insureds to Seek Extension if Their Claim Is Still Open

April 2, 2018

As the two-year statutory limit approaches for unresolved Wood Buffalo wildfire claims, the Superintendent issued a notice (March 29, 2018) regarding the voluntary extension of this period.

The Superintendent expects that insurers will consider in good faith all requests to extend this period for these outstanding claims. The individual circumstances as well as the scope of the catastrophic event should be considered.

Further, the Superintendent advises such insureds with outstanding claims to contact their insurance representative about an extension. If granted, the extension should be in writing. If not granted, the insured should use the company's complaint resolution process. If still not granted, the insured should seek legal advice.

Those who wish to dispute a claim must commence legal action before the statutory limitation date or its extension date.
