The countries in North America, Central America, and South America form an active trading area with a combination of developed and developing economies. The United States and Canada are in the top ten major trading nations, and, among developing countries, the economies of Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Argentina are growing very rapidly in spite of current economic problems.

Acquire in-depth knowledge of the markets of North, Central, and South America to learn how to make the culture of these markets work for you. Hone your Internet, import/export, trade, business-management, cross-cultural, and interpersonal skill.

The Global Village

Amid great economic, technological, political, and social change, international business offers a wide range of opportunities to small- and medium-sized companies that increasingly have the resources to take advantage of them.

  • With a focus on countries in the Americas, learn the five main ways international business is conducted, the five current significant trends affecting international business, and the different factors that motivate countries and companies to trade internationally.
  • Use Internet resources to research trends in international business and to locate trade resources for small companies.
International Organizations

The nations of the world have different governments, laws, economies, and cultures, so multinational organizations have evolved to provide rules for international trade and development.

  • Learn the three main functions of the World Trade Organization.
  • Define the role of the International Monetary Fund.
  • Discuss the relationship between foreign aid and sustainable development.
  • Identify three strategies the World Bank Group uses to stimulate private-sector growth in developing nations.
  • State the goal of the Inter-American Development Bank.
  • Use the Internet to research business development opportunities in the Americas.
Business and Culture

Technology has made the global village a reality, and businesses of all sizes now engage in trade beyond their own borders.

  • While defining culture and examining the connections between culture and business in various countries in the Americas, learn similarities and differences in the way business is conducted.
  • Identify strategies for responding to cultural differences and demonstrating cultural sensitivity.
  • Use the Internet to research cultural differences that will prepare you to do business in a different culture and help your international business succeed.

  • Learn how the difference between between polychronism and monochronism, and between collectivism and individualism, influence the way business is conducted.
  • Identify at least four business travel tips, and formulate strategies for communicating effectively with someone whose first language is different from yours.

If you are preparing to do business in another culture, it's a good idea to have at least a basic understanding of the history that shaped the country’s present-day politics, economy, and culture.

  • Focusing on North America, Central America, and South America, learn how historical events can affect a country’s approach to business.
  • Following website links we provide, use the Internet to research the history, the geography, and the politics in countries of the Americas so you can develop examples of how familiarity with a country's history can help you do business in that country.
  • Overview the relationship between historical events and current economic conditions of the Aboriginal peoples of the Americas.
